The abundance of pills in your work
makes a powerful statement to me
regarding America being so over
medicated. And yet they are quite
beautiful as abstract shapes and
colors. Using the pills as a design
element is extraordinary. Tell me
about the introduction of the pills to
your works and the reason for
including them in the iconography of
your work.

I started using pills solely as design
elements. I needed an element to set
off my more illustrative areas from the
flatly designed areas within my
paintings. With these prints, I was
able to enlarge the scale of the pills
and heighten their visual and
conceptual properties. Recently,
someone came up to me who saw
my work advertised with the ‘Blue Cat
Cubed’ and said, “I like the one with
the pink ping pong balls.” This made
me laugh.
