In
looking at ‘Big Pill Buddha’, it’s
interesting how when I see an
airplane image, I immediately think
of 9/11. But juxtaposed with the
Buddha, it takes on a new meaning.
What are your thoughts?
‘Big
Pill Buddha’ is unique because I
utilized only photography to create this
image. The series of plane shapes
were taken from a casual photograph
of a shirt my nephew was wearing
while visiting last summer. A
photograph of a very rare cirrus flower
is symmetrically integrated with these
planes. The head is from a Buddhist
sculpture that I photographed 15
years ago. The pills, then bright
yellow, were scanned directly into the
computer. Digital media allows me to
put these elements together in ways
that I can’t in any other art form. And
even though these elements are
coming from several different places,
the viewer is still able to make sense
of it. I think this is possible because
we live in a very paradoxical age
where opposites exist together. The
scattered planes juxtaposed with the
calming smile of the Buddha help
represent this paradigm.
