Scratching the Surface

I have been creating this series since 2003, and it is united by the relentless search for the meaning of place and the meticulous investigation into the surface of things. After 25 years of making things look “flawless” as an advertising photographer, I now am exploring ways to dig deeper than the surface gloss and reveal richer, more tactile images that convey my sense of wonder about the world around me. Through the assemblage of this imagery, from the scratches and distress layers to combinations of multiple scenic elements, a derivative image is created that overlays emotion, history and a sense of mystery with the scene.
